FOSS California Program Components: Resources Books
FOSS Science Resources Student Books
Science Resources are original student books developed specifically to complement the FOSS investigations and provide content-area reading. The articles are written mainly in an expository format. With FOSS, students first explore science concepts through active investigations, and then they extend and reinforce their classroom discoveries and vocabulary with Science Resources.
Grades K-2
Module-specific softcover books are designed around large, colorful photographs. The text relates directly to the images, calling attention to particular details, suggesting comparisons, and encouraging students to think critically about the images. A glossary of the science vocabulary is included in each book. Review and discussion items are included in the grades 1-2 books.
Grades 3-5
Science Resources is a hardcover, grade-level book of original readings developed to address science content. The books use a variety of writing styles accompanied by full-color illustrations and photos to enrich the content. A complete glossary of the science vocabulary for each strand is included in each book.
After each investigation's readings, the books provide:
- A summary article and questions
- A vocabulary review
- A list of California science standards addressed
- Math Problem of the Week
- Home/School Connections
Each kit includes one grade-level Science Resources book. Additional copies may be purchased separately.
